It is very difficult to give feeding advice as there are so many variants to consider when it comers to feeding pigs, says Adam Henson.
There are lots of breeds of pig, they vary in shape and size and they're kept in all sorts of different situations whether that's indoors, in fields, woods or orchards.
Then of course the nutritional requirements are also dependant on age, sex, whether the animal is pregnant, feeding piglets or whether it's being reared for pork, bacon or for showing.
As a rule of thumb I would generally advise that you offer a compound feed that contains all the correct minerals and vitamins. A 16 percent protein sow and weaner nut is very versatile and suits most needs and can be bought from any animal feed supplier in 20kg bags or in bulk if you have a lot of pigs and a bulk bin to store it in.
Piglets should have had access to solid feed while with the sow, and once they are weaned of the mothers at about six to eight weeks of age they can have plenty of the same food. At around four months of age this can then be rationed to 2kg per day.
Adult pigs of a standard size can live off about 2kg per day but need more feed when they're heavily pregnant or feeding young..
