Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds, loved and adored for their friendly nature and luscious golden coat.
They are one of the bigger dog breeds, but they still make for great family pets and are easy to train thanks to their intelligence and eagerness to please.
Here's everything you need to know about golden retrievers.
Golden retriever characteristics
Golden retrievers are intelligent dogs who follow instruction well. As a result, they are easy to train and respond well to strict training.
They have a natural working instinct, as they are gundogs. These days, they thrive as guides for the blind, in search and rescue operations and in competitive events. They are often one of the most prominent dog breeds at Crufts every year.
Thanks to their friendly temperament and their relaxed nature around children, golden retrievers make excellent family dogs.
Golden retrievers are very similar to labrador retrievers, but they have a longer coat. Their temperaments are very similar – both are loyal and energetic, and can be very well trained.
Origins: where do golden retrievers come from?
Golden retrievers were traditionally bred as Scottish gundogs and water retrievers to assist hunters. They were first shown in England in 1908 and were registered with The Kennel Club as its unique retriever breed in 1913.
They were initially developed in the 19th century by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks from flat-coated retrievers crossed with tweed water spaniels, and some other British dog breeds at the time.
What colours are golden retrievers?
Golden retrievers are shades of gold and cream.

Suitable owners
Golden retrievers are energetic and powerful dogs who need outdoor play, so they're better suited for active dog owners who enjoy exercise.
It's also worth flagging that golden retrievers shed their double coat once or twice a year – and they also shed on a lower level on a regular basis. As a result, they'll need good grooming twice a week to prevent too much hair shedding around the home.

How long do golden retrievers live?
The average golden retriever lifespan is 10-12 years if they are healthy.

How much exercise do they need?
As is the case with most sporting dogs, golden retrievers need plenty of exercise. Two hours a day is generally recommended, spread across several walks during the course of the day. They make great companions on long walks, runs or bike rides. They also enjoy regular playtime, as they can get bored easily. Make sure you always have a ball to hand, as 'retrieving' is unsurprisingly their favourite thing to do!
When is a golden retriever fully grown?
Golden retrievers are muscular, medium-sized dogs. They should weigh up to 40kg. Male dogs will generally be 56-61cm tall and bitches 51-56cm tall.
