How did Matt Baker get into television presenting?

Matt studied at drama school in Edinburgh before auditioning for Blue Peter. The showreel he sent in included footage of him reading a story, in the farmyard and home, and riding a unicycle!

Before landing the Blue Peter job, Matt toured the north of the country as part of a 1970s comedy disco-dancing revival show called ‘Disco Inferno’.

Does Matt Baker own a farm?

Yes, Matt lives on the farm he grew up on in the Durham hills.

Matt has produced several farm-related programmes with Channel 4, including Our Farm in the Dales, a 2021 show that saw him and his family move to the organic sheep farm where he grew up in the Durham hills to help secure its future.

More recently with Channel 4, Matt Baker also presented Our Dream Farm, a hunt for the new tenants of the National Trust's vacant Wallington Estate farm.

Does he still present Countryfile?

Matt Baker has been presenting BBC One's Countryfile since 2009 and continues to do so, but he does present less than he used to, with time spent on other projects. There are now more presenters in the Countryfile roster.

When did Matt Baker get his big break?

Like many television presenters before him Matt got his big break on Blue Peter. Another presenter who got their big break on Blue Peter is Helen Skelton.

Matt won the BAFTA for best children's television presenter two years in a row while on Blue Peter, and a Royal Television Society award.

To help him settle into life on Blue Peter Matt asked if he could have a dog on the show - a tradition among many presenters before him. Meg the border collie joined Matt at just nine weeks old and came home with him when he left Blue Peter in 2006. (We named the border collie as one of the best herding dog breeds).

Meg sadly passed away aged 11 but her bark lives on - it was recorded by the sound effects team on The Archers show on BBC Radio 4. Whenever you hear the bark of a working dog on The Archers that's Meg!

What else has Matt Baker presented?

Matt Baker is particularly famous for presenting The One Show for nine years and Countryfile for nearly a decade. However his other programmes include Our Farm in the Dales, Matt Baker and Travels with Mum & Dad.

He was also a former gymnast and often joins the BBC sport team as a world gymnastics championships presenter and commentator, covering the gymnastics at the Olympics - look out for him in Paris this summer.

He has finished runner up on the eighth series of Strictly Come Dancing - where he wowed the judges with his gymnastic skills in his show dance.
