Let us explain. Long established as a morning routine across the Mediterranean, the habit of drinking a spoonful of olive oil every day hasn't quite taken root in the UK (perhaps because we'd rather follow Mary Poppin's advice). What is the science behind drinking olive oil?
In an experiment conducted by Dr Bill Mullen and Dr Emilie Combet Aspray for the BBC, 70 volunteers were recruited, who all donated a sample of urine. They were then split into two groups – one group were given a supply of extra virgin olive oil, and one group ‘normal’ olive oil.
The study concluded that just 20ml of uncooked olive oil a day – whether extra virgin or regular – can have a positive impact on heart health. Interestingly, both types delivered the same benefits, indicating that it’s not just the plant compounds in extra virgin olive oil at work. Instead, it could be the oil’s unique balance of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fats, or perhaps it's the omega-3 and omega-6 content that makes the difference.
