Our review
This isn’t an all-bells-and-whistles offering – instead, it’s a classic, sturdy, battery-powered lantern. Its old-fashioned aesthetic has a certain charm.

Pros:

It’s extremely easy to use and has a pleasing, old-school look. Its 360º beam has a comfortable all-round glow.

Cons:

It requires hefty batteries and is therefore heavy, compared to modern camping lights. It’s not compact or easily portable in backpacks.

First impressions

This is an attractive lantern in the classic style – a bright beam inside a glass case, with a handle for carrying and a sturdy design for standing. It isn’t light or compact, so isn’t designed for backpacking, but it would make a good addition for longer-term camping.

Brightness of light

Coleman BatteryGuard 600L Lantern images 3

The Coleman 600 has just two light settings, of 600 lumens or 75 lumens. The bright setting offers a strong 360º beam that lights to a distance of 12 metres, so perfect for finding and seeking. The low setting offers a softer glow that stretches to six metres, great for gently lighting up an environment.

Is it easy to use?

Once the batteries are sourced (they aren’t included), it is very easy to use. A dial at the top turns the lantern on and between its two settings. Super simple.

How is the battery life?

The lantern’s BatteryGuard function apparently extends battery life by 25% by protecting against corrosion and battery drain when not in use.

If left on non-stop, the lantern will last for 30 hours on its high setting and 200 hours on the lower setting.

Is the device rechargeable?

No, not unless you use rechargeable batteries.

How portable is the camping light?

Due to its size and weight, the Coleman 600 isn’t a great choice for carrying in backpacks on long hikes. But once at a campsite, it has a handle and can stand comfortably wherever it is set down, so can be moved around easily.

Best used for:

Family camping trips, festivals, around the house and garden.

Good value?

Yes, for a solid old-school camping lantern.
