Britain’s roads are perilous. The most recent Government statistics from 2023 reveal that 28,967 people were seriously injured on the UK’s roads that year, with 1,695 deaths.

Using the 10-year average from 2013–2024, five people die and 80 are badly injured every day on our roads. Motorcyclists are the most at risk.

What is the UK’s most dangerous road?

As for Britain’s most dangerous ‘A’ road, in the early 2000s the AA divided the number of accidents by the number of vehicles using a road. It found that the eight-mile stretch of the A889 between the Highland towns of Dalwhinnie and Laggan was twice as dangerous as the second-placed road: the A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton in the Peak District. In 2022, a BBC Panorama programme labelled the A82 between Glasgow and Fort William as Britain’s most dangerous.

The A1(M) is the UK’s most dangerous motorway, with London’s M25 close behind.
