The new Welsh-made drama on ITV1 was shot entirely in Wales, in locations from Newport to Carmarthenshire
Martin Clunes stars as troubled Welsh farmer and father, Nathan, who is confronted with dark forces seeping into his rural community in this new thriller that premiered on 19th January.
County lines drug-dealing and an escalating and insidious crime wave sweeping the British countryside are the subject of Out There, which also features a strong Welsh cast.
What is Out There about?
The gritty drama depicts the invasion of the land farmer Nathan cherishes with devastating consequences as his livelihood, homestead and family life are threatened by local county lines drugs dealers.
These dealers are essentially urban gangs using the British countryside as a field of operations and moving drugs and money between their inner-city hubs.
Where is Out There filmed?
Many different locations across Wales were used for filming, which took place in 2023. Wales was chosen because of the stunning rural landscapes it has to offer. Out There was produced in association with Creative Wales, a Welsh Government agency providing support to Welsh creative industries.
A great majority of the filming took place in the Black Mountains, a group of hills spread across parts of Powys and Monmouthshire. Filming also took place in Llandovery, a historic market town on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
The farms locations were in Llangattock, near Crickhowell and in Llyswen, near Brecon.
Why was Out There filmed in Wales?
According to the Radio Times, the decision to set the series in mid-Wales, near the border of England, was taken due to its strong sense of territory and and border. It is an idyllic place where you can't imagine county lines drug crime taking place.
Martin Clunes plays a traditional farmer who is blindsided by the action. He told the Radio Times: "The locations were beautiful. I like being on a farm and being in the countryside. I was in my element."
Natalia Kostrzewa, who plays Eva, said she loved working in Wales. "I am sure viewers will appreciate the work of the director of photography on this production," she said. "He has shown the countryside in Wales in such a beautiful way."
Newport was the city location, and Trefil near Merthyr Tydfil, Port Talbot and Swansea also feature.
Dragon Studios in Cardiff were also used.
Can I visit Out There locations?
The Black Mountains are a range of mountains in the east of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, which extend across the national border into Herefordshire, England.
They are the easternmost of the four mountain ranges that comprise the National Park, which is an incredible destination for walking, biking, horse riding and wildlife spotting.
LLandovery is a beautiful market town in Carmarthenshire, full of characterful buildings, shops, cafes and pubs serving local fare. It is the destination in our Heart of Wales Line Trail walk.
You can reach Llangattock in just an hour in the car from Cardiff or Bristol and the escarpment is a dramatic place to explore.
Crickhowell and Abergavenny are great bases from which to explore the Black Mountains.
