Featuring watery landscapes, romantic ruins and quintessentially English scenes, the Janette Rosing Collection transports us to a different place in time.
Now Historic England has announced that it's acquired the world-class collection, which features some of the finest earliest landscape photography of England.
The collection includes over 8,000 original black and white photographs of English landscapes, architecture and maritime history, dating from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s.
Janette Rosing was a renowned photographic consultant and collector who dedicated her life to studying and amassing a collection of 19th and early 20th century photographs. Her fascination with this was sparked when she found a photograph of Hartland Quay, on the Devon coast, before it was ravaged by a storm.

It's hoped that fundraising efforts will help catalogue and digitise the entire collection. The full Historic England Archive includes over 14 million photographs, drawings, plans, documents and publications from the 1850s to the present day. The digital library holds over 1.5 million records and nearly 650,000 images.
