First impressions

As you might expect from Helly Hansen, this is a nice-looking pair of shoes. Unlike a lot of water shoes, they look like a pretty standard pair of trainers, and are even quite comfortable to wear away from the water. The sturdy heel is particularly attractive if, like us, you need good support under your feet.

Fit

Despite having extra wide feet, the Supalight Moc One was easy to get on (less easy to get off when wet, but that’s par for the course) and fitted snuggly. We tested a size 11, which can often be a bit hit-and-miss, but these were bang on for size. The fitted lace makes adjustments quick and easy, although even after adjusting, a disappointing amount of shingles made their way inside when tested on the beach.

Are they comfortable?

Away from the shingles, you’d hardly know you had these shoes on, they’re so effortlessly easy wearing. Out of the water, they offer pretty good support for such a lightweight shoe, and once you get your feet below the surface, they’re as comfy as anything we’ve tested.

Are they grippy?

If you’re a fan of paddle boarding or other board sports, you’ll find these offer a grip to rival Spider-Man himself. They also handled well when tested clambering over rocks both in and out of the water.

Are they easy to pack?

Despite the design giving the impression of a sturdy trainer, they squidge down to next-to-nothing, meaning they are easy to squeeze into bags that were already fit to burst.

Do they feel durable?

After testing, the Supalight Moc One looked as good as new and there’s no reason to think they wouldn’t stay that way for a long life, thanks to layers of recycled polyester webbing supported by heel and toe reinforcement and a full rubber soul. Another attractive feature is the antimicrobial treatment that prevents odour.

Is there any toe protection for rougher terrain?

Yes – toes and heels are both fortified by extra layers of protection.

Good value?

Having tested water shoes at every entry point, these are clearly one of the more expensive, but the difference in quality, both in terms of design and build, is obvious.

Best suited for:

Given the issues we had with the shoes filling with shingles, you might be best off using these on sandy beaches or for firmer freshwater pursuits.
