Our review: a sturdy and supportive pair of sandals made to be as comfortable in the water as out of it
Jump to product specifications
USA footwear specialists Keen have been making hybrid land and water footwear since 2003. Their ‘Consciously Created’ approach puts a strong focus on supply chain as well as environmental impact. The Women’s Astoria West Sandal has been designed by and for women to have additional lift and a women’s specific fit. Keen’s Men’s Newport H2 has a similar design.
First impressions
These sandals are obviously built for comfort and practicality and, although several colourways are available, perhaps lack something when it comes to looks. For such a sturdy pair of sandals, they feel light on the foot and trustworthy enough for some rougher trails. Their hybrid design should make them a good choice for walks that include beaches or river crossings.
Fit
Where some sandals rely on separate fastenings at the ankle, foot and toe, the Astoria West controls fit through a combination of stretchy upper textile and a quick adjust bungee cord. The moulded footbed gives a comfortable level of support with less flexibility than some sandals. These sandals fit true to size but might not be the right choice if you have very slim or wide feet.
Are they grippy?
Intended to be used in the water as much as out of it, the soles on these sandals have zonal siping (small slits in the tread pattern), which carries away water and improves the good level of grip already provided by Keen’s own Aquagrip rubber.
How do they feel?
This is a sturdy pair of sandals that holds the foot in a similar way to walking trainers. The multiple touch points and soft fabric lining make them a comfortable wear and the bungee cord allows for quick adjustment, for example as your feet swell on a hot day. These sandals have plenty of arch support and the insole is soft. The back strap feels low on the heel but stays taught even on a longer walk.
Durability?
This is a sturdy pair of sandals that has been built to last. If you’re used to throwing sandals out because of their odour, the fact that these are machine washable could make them a good choice.
Sustainability and ethics?
Keen have their own factories in Portland, Dominican Republic and Thailand. They have strong eco-credentials that include not using PFAS ‘forever’ chemicals in any of their footwear. These sandals contain textiles that have been created from recycled bottles.
Good value?
Yes. If sustainability and durability are important to you.
