Muck Boots first launched in 1999 with the aim of bringing ‘high performance to the outdoor footwear market’. Their popular Muckmaster was designed a decade ago with farmers and outdoor workers in mind, and has a warm lining the brand reckon will ‘provide comfort in extreme conditions’.

First impressions

Pull them out of the box and you can tell the Muckmasters mean business. These boots are the heaviest we tested thanks to a rugged rubber body and big soles, and the toe is super-solid. A stretchy neoprene upper, a solid rubber footbox and neoprene lining make these boots feel like they’d be ready for anything.

Fit

Slipping into these boots is like a nice warm cuddle for your feet – we reckon the Muckmaster offered the best fit of all the wellies we tested, and were true to size when worn with wool socks. Despite their heft these boots are surprisingly malleable underfoot, and feet don’t slide around thanks to a thick insole. The soft neoprene upper of the Muckmaster hugs the leg nicely – this snug fit also keeps rain away from your socks. A lovely, cushioning neoprene lining feels much nicer on the feet and legs than some plastiky wellies.

Are they grippy?

Best on test. The Muckmaster wellies are a solid choice for all-day wear. Image: BBC Countryfile Magazine / Sian Lewis

The Muckmaster stood out on test when it game to traction – high, thick rubber soles and good deep lugs make these boots reliably grippy even if you’re walking on slick muddy surfaces, so they’re ideal for working outdoors and even walking fair distances in.

Suitable for...

When the going gets tough these boots will keep up, and on test we liked the thick, solid toe, which withstands knocks and scrapes, and the impressively warm lining of the Muckmaster – Muck Boot reckon they’ll keep you comfortable down to -30C. While the boot boasts an ‘Airmesh’ lining, we didn’t notice much breathability and wouldn’t wear them in the summer months – swap to non-insulated wellies if the sun comes out. These workhorses should last you years – and they’re a bargain for such good quality.
