First impressions

This is a lovely spacious two-person tent, easy to put up and pack down, lightweight and well-suited to backpacking.

Is it easy to pitch?

The tent is very easy to pitch. It comes in four parts – waterproof flysheet and groundsheet, lightweight tentpegs and three lightweight alloy poles. The poles are colour-coded for easy pitching and the whole tent can be erected in about 10 minutes.

Peg down the flysheet, weave the single long pole through the central eyelets, peg the guy ropes either side to bring the central pole to standing, and then use the two smaller poles to prop the ends up. This erects the outer tent. Next, clip the groundsheet inside. Voila.

What about packing away?

Similarly, it’s easy to pack down. You can either unclip the groundsheet and store separately or pack it all down and roll it up together. It fits into the carrybag, which is extendable.

What is the inner tent like?

The inner tent is spacious for a two-person tent (nothing will be palatial at this size). It has decent ventilation, with multiple vents and a mesh door to keep insects out while allowing air in. There is also a small porch area for muddy boots.

How waterproof is the tent?

The flysheet and groundsheet are both waterproof – the flysheet has 5000mm hydrostatic head; the groundsheet 10000mm hydrostatic head.

Is the tent lightweight enough for multi-day hikes?

Montegra 2-Man Backpacking Tent

At 2.2kg, the tent is perfectly suited to multiday hikes. It’s a neat and nifty tent for carting around and putting up quickly.

Best used for:

Backpacking holidays and long multiday hikes.

Good value?

This is a great tent — portable, lightweight, easy to assemble and all in all, good value for money.
