Pros:

Cheap | comes in a variety of colours | good grip

Cons:

Not the easiest to get on, especially when wet | small for the size | limited support/protection

Our verdict: If you’re looking for a casual, budget aqua shoe to use for light or occasional use, then the Subea Aquashoes 120 are ideal. More serious users might want to up the budget, however.

First impressions

A simple water shoe where all the appeal is in the sole – great for slinging in a bag when you’re heading for aquatic fun, but probably not the best for more serious water sports.

Fit

These aren’t the easiest shoes to get on, even when they’re dry. We tested at size 11-12, which was slightly too small even for a size 11 foot, so maybe worth ordering a size up (sadly not an option if you share our foot size). There’s no adjustability, but the lack of such features is reflected in the price.

Are they comfortable?

Once they’re on, they’re like a second skin. There’s not a huge amount of support – they’re designed for snorkelling and aquatic touring, rather than clambering over wet and rocky coasts or unsound freshwater streams and rivers, so keep that in mind.

Are they grippy?

The grip is the biggest selling point of the Subea Aquashoes 120 – 5mm-thick studded rubber soles are great on pebbles.

Are they easy to pack?

Subea Aquashoes 120

Aside from the 5mm sole, there’s almost nothing to these shoes, so they’re easy to cram in even the fullest pack, nook or cranny.

Durability

For the price, these feel like they would last a decent while – the stitching is strong and the soles chunky enough to give a decent lifespan.

Is there any toe protection for rougher terrain?

The manufacturer says that they’ve been designed for stony terrain, coral sands or even pebbles, but that you can walk on rockier ground, albeit with limited comfort. However, if you’re looking for a multipurpose water shoe for harder use, this is probably not the shoe you’re looking for.

Good value?

At the price, it’s hard to go wrong, and Decathlon are known for their quality at an affordable price.

Best suited for:

Ideal for light use – snorkelling, paddle boarding and general aquatic wanderings. Not the best for more hardcore activities.
