First impressions
Versatility is central to this jacket. As the name suggests, the Denton is actually three jackets in one.
A waterproof outer shell has a detachable quilted puffer jacket liner, so you can wear both together for warmth, comfort and protection; you can ditch the liner in warmer weather, leaving you with a more lightweight waterproof outer; or you can lose the shell and wear the liner on its own as a snug puffer jacket if you’re not expecting a deluge.
How waterproof is the jacket?
As a parent, I know there aren’t many tests as stringent as standing on the touchline of a children’s football match in torrential rain, and after 90 minutes of biblical downpour, it didn’t leak a drop, the rain simply running off in satisfying streams.
Put to more energetic use on a coastal footpath hike when the heavens opened and the wind blew in, it kept all of the elements at bay. In fact, the only time the outer jacket showed any vulnerability was during a long hike while wearing a heavy backpack, but even then, it was minimal.
Indeed, it feels the 10,000mm rating could be underselling things.
Is it comfortable to wear?
Pulling on the Denton 3-in-1 is a little like snuggling under a duvet on a stormy night. It’s soft and enveloping, snug as a bug, yet without being restrictive in movement. It strikes just the right balance.
The breathable fabric means that while it keeps you warm, it also prevents you getting wet from the inside.
Fit and design features
Size-wise, this came up slightly larger than expected, so no need to size up as with some jackets.
In terms of features, it’s packed with them. The two layers combine thanks to neat press studs at the cuffs and neck – quick and simple to take apart and put back together. The inner features a draw-string adjuster at the bottom and elasticated wrists, with two pockets inside and out. The shell also has a draw-string at the hem, and Velcro cuff adjusters.
As a glasses-wearer, I very much appreciated the strong peak on the hood of the outer shell, which can be adjusted back and sides to suit different activities and weathers, while the high collar is both stylish and effective as a barrier to the wind. The main zip is waterproof, of course, as are the zips on the spacious external pockets (two chest and two lower).
Oh, and you can unzip the hood if you’re confident about the forecast.
Is the jacket lightweight and packable?
If you’re looking for a lightweight jacket to cram into a pack, this is probably not the coat you’re looking for. Which isn’t to say it’s bulky or heavy: it isn’t.
Durable?
The Denton 3-in-1 oozes quality. Taped seams and high-performance materials, with the design and build quality you’d expect from a TOG24 piece.
Good value?
While this isn’t the cheapest jacket, the versatility means that you really are getting three coats for the price of one. In a short time, we soon found that all three combinations had their place, and a couple of more dedicated coats have since found their way to the charity shop.
Best suited for:
This really is a jacket of all trades – it’s stylish and adaptable enough for general wear and practical for sports and hiking. If you only want one jacket, this may well be the one.
