Based on the true story of an epic trek along the South West Coast Path, The Salt Path shows off the stunning but unforgiving landscape of the UK's coastline.

Adapted from Raynor Winn's memoir of the same name, the film stars Gillian Anderson as Raynor and Jason Isaacs as Moth. After being removed from their home and receiving Moth's Corticobasal degeneration diagnosis, the couple decide to walk the 630-mile long coast path (which we named as one of the toughest long-distance walking trails) in the hope of finding solace. We take a look at the filming locations used.

Where was The Salt Path filmed?

The Salt Path was filmed across south Wales, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. Filming took place in summer 2023.

In the book, Rame Head marks the halfway point of Raynor and Moth's walk – and it makes an extraordinary backdrop for a reflective moment in the film. You can take the ferry from Plymouth and explore the wilds of Rame Peninsula AONB, and walk up to St Michael's Chapel.

The coastline around north Devon is particularly dramatic and Valley of Rocks, along the boundaries of Exmoor National Park, is no exception. Lots of promotional material for The Salt Path shows off this spectacular scenery – and during quieter times, the area feels like a lost world.

This quaint North Devon fishing village has appeared in other films such as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society and Treasure Island. And it's no wonder, as its cobbled streets and whitewashed cottages lend plenty of old-world charm. However, to maintain and preserve the ancient village there is an admission fee – how will that affect Raynor and Moth's limited budget?

Newquay, Cornwall

The South West Coast Path also passes through towns, and Newquay is one of Cornwall's largest. However, finding it too noisy and busy, Raynor and Winn quickly head out of the centre.
