A lodge in Lincolnshire is celebrating sightings of some otterly adorable new neighbours.

Bainland Lodge Retreats shared a video of wild otters swimming, ducking and diving in its waterways. “Our rewilding efforts at Bainland have brought these adorable creatures right to our collection of lakeside lodges,” says Bainland on Instagram.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, pesticide pollution nearly wiped out Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) in the UK. But, thanks to cleanup and restoration efforts, these adorable aquatic animals are returning in many parts of the country.

“The arrival of wild otters at several locations on our estate is amazing, as we continually work to protect and enhance our beautiful landscape,” says James Trafford, estate manager at Bainland Lodge Retreats.

The retreat also shared tips on how to see them. Firstly, remember that they live in freshwater so can be found in or close to lakes, rivers and canals. According to Bainland, you can increase your chances of spotting one by visiting a location that has had recent otter sightings between dusk and dawn, which is when these nocturnal animals are most active.

Importantly, stay very still and quiet while you’re waiting for an otter to appear – they are very shy!
